Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 2, Phillies 0

That’s a sweep! A SEASON sweep, in fact! And according to Marquee, it’s the first time in the HISTORY of the two teams playing each other that one has swept the season series against the other.

Keegan Thompson, as you see, shut things down again with three scoreless innings of relief. He has just been NAILS in that role this year, and it’s going to be pretty hard not to want him to do something similar next year.

In terms of how his command and pitches looked, that was as good as we’ve seen Javier Assad this year (right up there with that start against the Mets). He was commanding all of his pitches well, he was getting swings and misses, and he was generally throwing strikes. The Phillies seem to be in an incredible funk at the plate, so that helped, but I thought Assad very much looked the part of “quality depth starter” today, and that’s exactly what the Cubs need him to be in 2023.

Ian Happ had a great day, driving in the Cubs’ second run, and also showing off that legitimately-Gold-Glove defense in left field.

Seiya Suzuki had a hustle triple (ball was in the sun) before Happ drove him in for that second run, and it’s nice to see him back in the lineup. Suzuki also scored the first run of the game on a Patrick Wisdom double, after Suzuki had singled in the first.
