The nonprofit Animal Companions of Las Cruces (ACLC) will host the “For the Animals We Love” fundraiser 5:30-9 pm Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Fountain Theater, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe on the historic Mesilla Plaza.
Tickets are $20.
The event, sponsored by La Posta de Mesilla and the Mesilla Valley Film Society, will include a screening of “Kedi,” which ACLC describes as “a thoughtful, beautifully filmed look at Istanbul’s street feline population.” There will also be “entertaining animal shorts,” a silent auction, a cash bar and refreshments.
Proceeds of the event go toward “recruiting more veterinarians to the region,” said ACLC founder and president Dawn Duncan.
“At present, most pet owners do not have access to emergency veterinary care after hours and on weekends,” Duncan said. “The nearest emergency pet services are in El Paso, and sometimes there is a five-hour wait. Some pets don’t survive the trip. ACLC has been able to recruit a telemedicine service called VetTriage, but surgical emergencies are still referred mostly to El Paso,” she said.
ACLC “is an organized group of local volunteers who are working to bring emergency veterinary services to Las Cruces and southern New Mexico,” according to the organization’s website.
